I seen Manston airport is about to become a horse-importing airport, according to this story on the BBC site.
Ostensibly to offer a service for the Olympics, the £250,000 investment seems to be expecting a lot from a few short weeks next year, so maybe there's other expected uses - Chinese live Panda imports perhaps... 'Normal' meat for food brought in 'on the hoof' can't be economic as air freight can it? Maybe it's about horse racing... Still, the management team at the airport must have a good idea of potential clients for the new service. Mustn't they?

The drug imports seem to have been stopped perhaps it's a Trojan horse for imigrants.
Stargazer.
Infratil run a very profitable stables facility at Prestwick, and have been considering this for some time now. It seems a good idea

If there's money to be made in livestock air freight I'm all for it, just one of those obscure specialties that seem baffling at first sight.
Horse Transport is big business, good for Thanet and Manston hopefully.
lets hope its not another not in my back yard issue for those who dont want the airport to expand at any cost
Anon1:50 PM you will never stop the nimby's Manston suffers from them all the time. Even people living in Herne Bay moan about Manton, personally I love it and think it is a far better option than Boris's island in the sea idea. The chap is mad. Now with the fast train link from Ramsgate Manston is less than an hour from London.
aka don lets hope the nimby people dont win manston is far better than boris island all ready half built just needs updating a bit anon 1.50 28/01/2011

I think most would like to see a successful Manston, ideally with a nice mix of freight (for the employment and trade benefits) and useful travel destinations (for the tourism opportunities and another way to market the area). We got a bit fed up with the training flights when we were living in Ramsgate, but apart from that enjoyed the sight of aircraft doing their thing. Issues with night flying and environmental issues with contamination do need addressing, but nothing that can't be resolved by a modern business (and probably resolved more easily if it's successful).
With the Thanet Labour group seeking to win the Manston nimby vote, hence their recent anti-Manston stance, things do not look too hopeful. Should they win Thanet Council back in May, highly probable arising out of the cuts programme of the government, hope for a flourishing regional airport will vanish.
Sad really that an area's prosperity should be sacrificed in the cause of political point scoring.
